I was looking at the MSN homepage today and noticed they had a 10 Most Useless Website list up this morning. Submitted by PC Worlds, Mark Sullivan, he lists websites like the AOL IM dashboard, Meet an Inmate and, of course, Digg.com.
I really never got into Digg as a member, but I love taking a look once a month at the tech section and the images that get “dugg”. The website actually provides you with some of the coolest “anythings” from around the web. Allowing users to vote on submissions, propelling the story to the all elusive frontpage. Of course, with such a large user base, getting to the frontpage can earn you traffic like mad and even more votes.
OK, Digg isn’t a horrible site, but it is one of the most depressing when you compare it to what it once was. Digg’s top stories (as voted on by Digg users) used to be interesting and tech-oriented. But since Digg has grown so immensely popular, the top 10 Diggs usually consist of “lowest common denominator” stories: funny photos and videos, for the most part. It’s a site cursed by its own popularity.
It was a shock to see Digg on the list, but remember that it’s only one person’s opinion. While looking at the rest of the list, I notice that Digg really sticks out like soar thumb. But nonetheless, here is the rest of the list (source: MSN Tech)
- AOL Aim Dashboard – big surprise
- Haven Works – sort of hard on the eyes
- Juicy Campus – the best of college gossip
- Zombo – not really sure what this is
- Brill Productions – just like real life, only online
- City Optix – flash into gone bad and long
- Digg – well, we all have our own opinions
- Weekly World News – reliable news source, of course
- Meet an Inmate – no comment
- Bermuda Triangle – just a bad website, and idea
